Definition
Corneal Transplantation is a surgical procedure whereby a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by a clear cornea. The cornea is the clear front part of the eye that covers the iris and the pupil. A corneal transplant is commonly performed to improve vision by replacing the the opaque or distorted cornea with a healthy, clear cornea.
Indications The most common reason to perform corneal transplant is to improve vision in patients with keratoconus, pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, corneal scarring from trauma or corneal ulcers, and corneal dystrophies. There are different types of transplantation in which full thickness, partial thickness, or corneal endothelium (DSEK) can be performed.
